Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) — A new Harris Poll finds a plurality of Americans want all or most abortions to be illegal and overwhelming majorities of Americans want more abortion limits in law. The nationwide poll showed just 9 percent said abortion should be legal for any reason at any time during pregnancy — Barack Obama’s position.

Polling less than three thousand adults over three days is not nearly enough to represent three hundred million Americans. Where did this survey take place? Was it a random phone polling across the country or was it done door-to-door in one small town?

  2. Matt says:

3000 adults is indeed enough of a sample for a this population if the study is conducted correctly. Let’s look.

OK that was easy. The link I gave includes as its last paragraph:
    Survey Methodology
Harris Interactive® fielded the study on behalf of USCCB from December 10-12, 2008 via its QuickQuerySM online omnibus service, interviewing a nationwide sample of 2,341 U.S. adults aged 18 years and older. Data were weighted using propensity score weighting to be representative of the total U.S. adult population on the basis of region, age within gender, education, household income, race/ethnicity, and propensity to be online. No estimates of theoretical sampling error can be calculated; a full methodology is available.

Z, Lets discuss this. If the margin of error were 10% and all the data were wrong in the favor of the pro-life position (a statistical improbability) then the survey would still say that Americans think that the current laws and access to abortion are freer and less restrictive than they want.
The radical (and I mean radical in a philosophical not just a political sense) changes proposed in FOCA remove even those restrictions AND ask the taxpayer to pay every penny AND make it a crime for a health worker to refuse based on their ethical standards.
    What say you?

These findings are also consistent with the overwhelmingly pro-life message we’re seeing posted at http://change.gov/open_government/entry/advancing_reproductive_rights_and_health_in_a_new_administration
