Alarmism about Notre Dame

In this culture war there’s a current of  “I can’t figure this out so I’ll invent a demon to attack.”  A Mr. Wayne Madsen has written that Anti-Abortion thugs are arriving at Notre Dame to cause violence, etc.  It would be sad if it weren’t for the foolishness, political conflict and – hopefully not – violence that it will propagate.  Warning people about supposed violence and then using that “threat” to justify reprisals is just plain evil or in this case dumb.  Read the story here but don’t expect much in the way of substantiation or content.

Violent anti-Obama groups arriving in South Bend

By Wayne Madsen

(WMR) — According to sources with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the U.S. Army, and the White House, a number of members of violent pro-life groups are streaming into South Bend in anticipation of protests during the commencement address of President Barack Obama at Notre Dame. Obama is scheduled to give his address at Notre Dame on May 17.

A mathematician who happens to be politically very liberal wrote a “cult classic” in 1988 called Innumeracy.  His thesis – as I remember it – is that you have to have a working knowledge of statistics and a working knowledge of human psychology or you will dumb down your reality with conspiracy theories to simplify it enough to understand your world.  There are some personal attacks on Mr. Madsen that are quite humorous and argue that he’s not perhaps the sharpest knife in the drawer.  HOWEVER, on the issue of hate-inspired violence (is there any other kind?) he’s got the ear of some wackos who will cause trouble.

Satire about Mr. Madsen:

London – (Magnum Ass Mess): Conspiracy theory nutter Wayne Madsen is as smug as a bugger in a rugger scrum today despite his March 19 arrest…

Some conspiracy theorism from his own mouth (selling his books):

All this has even generated some self-deprecating humor:

I guess it’s comforting to know that conservatives don’t have a monopoly on quack conspiracy theories. Violent antiObama groups arriving in South Bend.

We’re a threat to national security?

An act of violence is a ProChoice act.  Directing well deserved scorn at (or prayers for) an abortionist is an ethical thing to do.  Calling for any violence toward them or the nation is so far from our mindset that this writer is clearly inventing a demon for them to go conquer.  https://deliberateengagement.wordpress.com/2009/04/14/were-a-threat-to-national-security/#comment-172

I don’t like Randall Terry’s tactics – they’re sensationalist and tasteless; I believe the ends could be better and more quickly achieved with less – flamboyant – methods. However, that being said, calling him a thug and suggesting that opposition to abortion is a threat to the President is not only irrational, is not merely “hate speech,” it is, as you say, Matt, inciting waves of violence – emotional violence toward abortion opponents if not physical acts against us.

Although Randall Terry’s tactics may seem over the top they are no different than the tactics used by Martin Luther King Jr or Frederick Douglas. They too were considered fringe extremists at the time but the outcome was worth it. Also, remember that our founding fathers were radical extremists that risked everything, including their lives. Mr. Terry is simply reacting to abortion as if it is a matter of life and death, which it is. He is willing to ruin his own reputation to get the word out about the urgency of a life and death issue. I applaud him for his willingness to get the attention to get the discussion going. If it weren’t for his getting attention then the media wouldn’t be covering any of this. The only ones discussing violence are the liberals and I fear they will incite it and blame the pro lifers.
