When the news first broke about the murder of George Tiller, he was identified as one of the few doctors in the nation performing late-term abortions. That information did not seem accurate or honest, and, sure enough! as more details have come in, we discover that the early reports – the ones which are fueling the emotionalism of the pro-“choice” advocates – were misleading.
It seems that Dr. Tiller is one of the few abortionists performing late-term (after-21 weeks’ gestation) abortions in a clinic – not a hospital setting. “Tiller’s Women’s Health Care Services clinic is one of just three in the nation where abortions are performed after the 21st week of pregnancy,” reports Fox News online.
According to the CDC, 1.4% of abortions performed occur at 21+ weeks – that is approximately forty per day, nationally. It is not possible nor is it reasonable for clinics to cover these cases; some states mandate that late-term abortions be performed in hospitals (which would be a safer location for the mother – and, should the baby survive the abortion attempt, provide reasonable health services for him/her, also)
So Tiller is not one of “only a few” late-term abortion providers in the nation; he is one of the very few who provided late-term abortions outside a hospital. That’s a critical difference. –
But given the lack of knowledge about abortion, and the abundance of mis-information about the procedures and about the humanity and personhood of the unborn being murdered through therapeutic abortion, the careless and incomplete and misleading reporting done on this story is increasing the general ignorance and fostering ill-founded sympathy for the practice.
