AUL reports on Senate trick in the works

February 14, 2010

Americans United for Life writes:

Dear Friend of Life,

For months, Speaker Pelosi, Senator Reid, and President Obama held secret meetings in an attempt to pass government-run health care that funded abortion. Then, after losing a Senate seat in Massachusetts and their filibuster-proof majority along with it, the Democrats publicly stated that they would work with Republicans on health care… but we have just learned their true intentions.

President Obama publicly called for a bi-partisan approach, even asking Republicans for an open televised session. But the truth has been exposed through news articles reporting that Speaker Pelosi’s top health care aide is telling insiders their real plan to get taxpayer-funded abortions.

Their secret plan is to pass two bills, using a procedure called reconciliation to avoid a filibuster in the Senate. One of the bills will be the pro-abortion Senate bill, which includes taxpayer funding for abortion. Then comes the trick…

Pelosi’s top health care aide said, “the reconciliation bill would trump the Senate bill… There’s a certain skill, there’s a trick, but I think we’ll get it done.” Given the Congressional leadership’s commitment to federal funding for abortion, you can be sure the trick will include abortion funding.

Once again we see that the will of the American people doesn’t matter, and the pro-abortion Congressional leadership will stop at nothing to force pro-life Americans to fund abortion with our tax dollars! We must keep up the pressure and make sure that they are stopped.

The pro-abortion lobby is salivating at the prospect of federally-funded abortions. According to Planned Parenthood, “we’ve never had a better chance” for a government takeover of health care and the funds for the largest expansion of abortion in America since Roe v. Wade.

This is outrageous. We all know that Washington politicians have a knack for saying one thing and doing another, but this takes duplicity to new heights. The stakes for protecting innocent life could not be higher and, as this news further demonstrates, the pro-abortion forces will stop at nothing to get taxpayer dollars for their work.

Fortunately, we know that a majority of Americans are pro-life, and together we will stand in strong opposition to taxpayer-funded abortions – regardless of any “tricks” pro-abortion members of Congress may have up their sleeve.

We’ve already learned of Planned Parenthood’s abortion “mega-mart” in Houston, Texas that could be a model for more large abortion centers around the country. The tragedy of this dramatic increase in innocent lives lost cannot happen. Will you stand with us to stop their efforts and stand for life?

Bishops Issue Call to Action

Bishops Issue Call to Action Regarding Public School Textbook

Bishop Peter J. Jugis of the Diocese of Charlotte and  Bishop Michael F. Burbidge of the Diocese of Raleigh have issued a joint alert due to their concern about some proposed wording for a public school textbook on civic and economics.  The proposed text asserts that Roe v. Wade, the 1973 decision by the U.S. Supreme Court that legalized abortion and struck down state and federal laws that regulated and limited access to abortion, is an example of how the Supreme Court has upheld rights against oppressive government.  The implication of this proposed text is that opposition to Roe v. Wade is wrong.  Let Your Voice be heard on this issue by writing directly to the committee of the state Department of Public Instruction that is seeking feedback on this matter.  Click here to read the bishop’s letter and to take action
Visit the Department of Public Instruction web page on this issue

The document in question is civics-economics.doc located at

Equally interestingly, the documents under the category “Healthful Living – Health Education“ are also full of what we could only call “social indoctrination.”  I ask this question, Why should the public school make it part of its curriculum to ask 6th graders to:

“Analyze the influences on responsible reproductive health and safety decision making.”

“Demonstrate, through practice scenarios, the analyzing influences skill to distinguish healthy from harmful influences, including media/social networking, on reproductive health and safety.”

I am curious as to what the secular culture (and so the school) would call a ‘healthy influence’ on the ‘reproductive health’ of a 6th grader.   What exactly is a ‘safe decision’ concerning ‘reproductive health’ that a sixth grader should be making?

Top Democrat Confirms Reconciliation on Table to Push Pro-Abortion Health Care

by Steven Ertelt Editor
February 12
, 2010 Washington, DC ( — A top Senate Democrat confirmed today that Democrats are going to push ahead with the plan to use the controversial reconciliation process to push through the pro-abortion health care bill. At minimum, they are using the idea as a means of trying to land some Republican support.

Reconciliation is a budget process the Senate can use to pass financial items on a majority vote by denying a filibuster.

With the House not supporting the pro-abortion Senate health care bill without major changes and a filibuster stopping the House bill in the Senate, the idea is to get the House to approve the Senate bill and another bill with changes while the Senate approves the bill with the changes on a majority vote.

The process would not appear to allow pro-life advocates any chance to stop the massive abortion funding in the bill or correct the other pro-abortion problems.

Homeland Security “Threat”

Is This Former Stay-at-Home Mom Our Greatest Security Threat?

The Department of Homeland Security has a clear, if difficult, mission. It includes securing 7,500 miles of border and 9,500 miles of shoreline, and protecting 300 million Americans from the threats posed by a bold and determined jihadist enemy.

But its greatest menace is a former stay at home mother of 11 and grandmother of eight from Brookfield, Wisconsin. Or so it would seem.

Peggy Hamill, state director of Pro-Life Wisconsin, is among a group of pro-life activists upon whom a DHS “threat assessment” was performed last year. The assessment targeted the free speech rights of peaceful pro-life activists in Madison, Wisconsin, who oppose the state university’s plans to force medical professionals to perform late-term abortions

White House Faith Office Director: Still Working on Plan to Reduce Abortions

by Steven Ertelt Editor
February 10, 2010

Washington, DC ( — In a new interview, the director of the White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships contends the Obama administration sis still working on a plan to reduce abortions. In the 13 months since Barack Obama became president, he’s promoted abortion and the office has produced nothing.

The faith office last held a meeting in May to discuss how to reduce abortions and promote adoption, and that meeting produced significant skepticism from pro-life advocates that the Obama administration was serious about reducing abortions.

In fact, one top Obama staffer admitted that the goal of the office and its eventual plan is not to reduce abortions but to reduced the “need” for them.

In an exclusive interview with CBN News lead correspondent David Brody, Joshua DuBois, the director of the office, sought to reassure pro-life advocates that a plan is forthcoming.

It’s very much a priority of the President to find common ground on this difficult issue,” DuBois told Brody.

He said his office, “along with the Domestic Policy Council in which we sit and The White House council on Women and Girls met with a range of organizations are now pulling together a lot of information to present to the President so that he can eventually talk about where the administration will go in this important area so that’s still very much on the table.”

Alabama Puts Planned Parenthood Clinic on Probation After Undercover Sting

Wednesday, February 10, 2010

A Planned Parenthood clinic in Alabama has been put on probation by the state after an undercover sting helped reveal that underage teens had been receiving abortions there without parental consent.

State health officials said the Birmingham, Ala., abortion clinic has until next week to present its plan to correct violations involving minors receiving abortions.

Investigators with the health department said records at the clinic showed several minors aged 13-15 had received abortions without proper verification of parental consent since November 2008.

An activist with “Live Action,” a California-based anti-abortion group, posed as a pregnant 14-year-old girl who needed a secret abortion. In an audio tape from the visit, an employee allegedly suggests that someone other than a parent or legal guardian could give consent.

Obama’s New Budget Contains Massive Funding of Abortion, Planned Parenthood

February 2, 2010

, 2010

Washington, DC ( — President Barack Obama released his FY 2011 budget on Monday and it contains provisions that will force Americans to pay for abortions in the United States and promoting abortion abroad. The budget takes advantage of Congress having overturned the ban on abortion funding in the nation’s capital.

Obama’s FY 2010 budget contained a new policy allowing public funding for abortion in the District of Columbia and Congress eventually approved overturning the Dornan amendment that had long banned funding.

Page 1248 of Obama’s proposed budget requests that public funding for abortion in the District of Columbia be continued.

As was the case last year, the Obama budget also proposes overturning another ban on abortion funding — concerning the Legal Services Corporation.

Congress has previously approved budgets that retain a long-standing prohibition on the Legal Services Corporation, which provides legal help to lower-income Americans, providing legal counseling to any person or entity “that participates in any litigation with respect to abortion.”

Page 1284 of the proposed budget Obama submitted to Congress includes a change to that law that would result in LSC funds going to people or groups that engage in abortion litigation provided that LSC funds are not used directly for the litigation.

Still, the concern for pro-life advocates is that the money is fungible and LSC is essentially reimbursed for providing legal advice and support for people or groups that are in lawsuits related to obtaining abortions.

Obama proposed this pro-abortion funding in his previous budget but members of Congress agreed on retaining the current abortion funding ban.
